Are Apple iPod Repairs Inevitable?
When it comes right down to it, the Apple iPod is a pretty fragile piece of hardware, and can break if you are not too careful.

First, make sure there is a phone number that works and, if you call it, someone actually picks up and answers. Furthermore, make sure that the agent who you talk to is familiar with iPods. Ask them if they can help figure out what kind of iPod you own if you describe it to them - if they get it right, then you probably have someone on the phone that knows what they are talking about. If you get a long silence, it's probably best to look elsewhere.

It is not uncommon for some customers to even have an emotional attachment to an iPod, for a variety of personal reasons. But we won't get into that here.
So if decide to have the iPod repaired, make sure you are getting a brand new part or, if the part is used (these are still good alternatives, by the way), ask for a discount. New parts a generally guaranteed for one year, while used parts can be covered for a shorter period of time. But any legitimate iPod repair service will make you aware of your options right from the start. And if they do no, don't be shy and ask about this right away.
Finally, if the repairs are too high to justify, consider selling the defective iPod to the service company for parts or get it back and put it on an auction site like eBay - you might just be surprised how much you can get for your broken iPod. In the end, it's entirely up to you to choose if you want to get your iPod fixed or investigate other alternatives.
If you DO decide to have the iPod player fixed, when you get it back from the repair company, run it through a series of tests - check to make sure the songs will play, you can hear to music out of both headphones, and the battery charges all the way and holds a charge over several days. And if you REALLY find that you received great service and saved some money, tell your friends - they probably have a non-working iPod sitting around in their house that they can get fixed too.
